In 1983, Rich and I graduated from Villanova University and we were faced with the same career challenges you are encountering today. It was a difficult task getting our first break in this business. One brokerage firm told Rich to "go out and get five years of sales experience." Another told me to "go find a firm to sponsor you for your broker exam and then we will talk to you." We interviewed at almost every brokerage firm. We would walk in off the street and knock on doors, but no one would give two young guys a chance. Finally, after months of pounding the pavement, we were persuasive enough to each find an employer who would give us an opportunity.

Today, the road is not much easier for men and women attempting to begin a career in the brokerage industry. Still, all too many brokerage firms are unwilling to take a chance on rookies.
